Terms of Use

By downloading or using the Locus app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use them.

Locus is licensed to you, not sold — a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on Apple-branded devices you own or control. An early supporter purchase is optional for the direct-download app. If obtained through the Mac App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies; where these terms are more restrictive of us or more protective of you, these terms control.

The early supporter license is US$19, paid once with tax included. It covers lifetime access to the Mac app downloaded from this website and all future updates to that Mac app, with no recurring charge. Separate App Store and mobile purchases are not included. Buying early is optional; customers who purchase later will pay a higher price.

When checkout is available, payment is handled by Dodo Payments, the merchant of record for the sale. Your receipt and license key are delivered by Dodo Payments. Keep them for your records. A purchase does not create a Locus account or upload your notes.

Activating your license in the app is optional, and Locus works fully without it. A license can be active on up to 3 Macs at a time; to move it, deactivate it on one of them in Settings ▸ License. Activation checks your key as described in the Privacy Policy. If a purchase is refunded, or a payment dispute ends in the buyer’s favor, its license is disabled, and the app stops showing it as activated at its next license check. Payment status never limits your access to your notes or your ability to export them.

Everything you create in Locus is yours — entirely. We claim no rights over your notes, and because the app never sends them to us, we never possess a copy to claim rights over. You are responsible for your own backups; Locus writes local daily backups and version snapshots, and works with standard tools like Time Machine, but the only durable backup strategy is one you verify yourself.

Don’t reverse-engineer the app except as permitted by law, don’t redistribute it as your own, and don’t use it to break the law. That’s the list.

Locus is in active development. Features may change, be added, or be removed between versions. We work hard to protect your data through backups and version history, but development software can have bugs — see the warranty section below and keep backups.

Locus and this website are provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages — including loss of data or profits — arising from your use of the app or website, even if advised of the possibility. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months preceding the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

You may stop using Locus at any time — your data is on your disk and exportable regardless. This license terminates automatically if you breach these terms.

We may update these terms; material changes will be reflected by the date above. Continued use after changes means acceptance.
